Vi kender allle Isam Bachiri, Lenny Martinez og Waqas Ali Qadri som Danmarks mest internationale, storsælgende hiphop gruppe, Outlandish. De passer så helt afgjort til deres navn, som Lenny opdagede ved at bladre en ordbog igennem: De er aparte, fremmedartet og eksotiske. Deres musikgenre er alsidig og bærer præg af  R & B, Hip-hop, rap og soul, hvor sproget er primært på engelsk ledsaget at spansk, nogle gange arabisk, pakistansk og dansk.

Men hvordan startede historien om Outlandish? Vi skal helt tilbage til 1991 i en københavnsk forstad Brøndby Strand, hvor fodbold er en del af hverdagen. Isam fra Marokko, Lenny fra Honduras og Waqas fra Pakistan i samme højhusblok, hvor de spillede fodbold og gik i ungdomsklubben Søholt, hvor den stod på hiphop og breakdance. I gymnasietiden hvor det udviklede sig til den musikalske del, som de øvede sig på i et musiklokale på Vester Borgerdyd Gymnasium. De kaldte sig for YGB / Young Gifted and Brown. YGB optrådte til fester, forårskoncerter og andre arrangementer.

I 1997 blev Outlandish ”født”, de udgav deres første single Pacific to Pacific for Amnesty International. 1998 kom singlen Saturday Night, der endte på soundtracket til den danske film Pizza King. Endelig kom det første album Outlandish’ s Official d. 26. april 2000. Den efterfølgende tid skete der en masse for gruppen. De modtog en pris ved Danish Music Awards 2001 for Årets Danske Rap udgivelse. Og der fulgte mange priser efter, bl.a. en Steppeulv, Kunstrådets musikudvalgs pris på 250.000 kr., Odder Højskoles Elevforenings Kulturpris, Den Gyldne Grundtvig på 10.000 kr., Nordic Music Award for Bedste Nordiske Artist og MTV’s Europe Music Award for Bedste Danske Navn.

Outlandish har udgivet 4 albums, hvor der på Closer than veins bliver der en Melodi Grand Prix vindersang fra 1963, Dansevisen fra Danmark fremført af Grethe og Jørgen Ingemann, lavet i dirty south genre og titlen blev Kom igen. Et par år før lavede de deres egen udgave af "Man Binder Os På Mund Og Hånd" af Poul Henningsen og Kai Normann Andersen, som de vandt en Steppeulv for. De har også haft en del kendte sangere, producere og djs m.fl. om sig, både live, videoer og på plade. Det er bl.a. Burhan G., Gypsies, Jonas Rendbo, Majid, Sami Yusuf, Uso, Zaki, Lucy Love, Salah Edin, Yadam, Danny Rai, Lawand Shakur Othman aka Turkman Souljah, Vicky Singh, Casper Bech, Toke Rosenkilde, Saqib, Kato, Yousuf Othman og Mintman (Carsten Mortensen).

Gruppen har også nærmest været jorden rundt. De turnerede med selveste Carlos Santana i mere end 2 år, hvor de var opvarmning for ham og spillede med på nummeret ”Everybody”. Allerede der kom de til Frankrig, Italien, Tyskland, Holland og Schweiz, mellemøsten og USA. Derudover har de været på USA tour, hvor de besøgte Los Angeles, Tampa, Detroit, Dallas, Chicago og New York, hvor de spillede en støttekoncert i FN’s Hovedkvarter. De har også været i Cairo i Ægypten, Rumænien, Bulgarien, Dubai, Sverige, Norge og Sarajevo. De har sørme også været på Wembley i Englang, hvor de spillede for 15.000 mennesker til endnu en støttekoncert. Selv i Royal Albert Hall i London har Outlandish optrådt. Og hjemme i Danmark har de optrådt i Parken, Tivoli, til Roskilde Festival, til Langelandsfestivalen og meget, meget mere.

Man må virkelig tage hatten af for de 3 fantastiske herrer, de har været meget engagerede i velgørenhed, både herhjemme og i udlandet. De har f.eks. doneret en DMA pris og en guitar Lenny modtog af Carlos Santana. De har et stort hjerte. Outlandish optrådte også til Hopenhagen og fik oven i købet dansede med Desmond Tutu, som overraskede os alle ved at komme ind på scenen under sangen, I only ask of god. Det var en utrolig stemning, rigtig international der midt på Rådhuspladsen.

De er heller ikke bange for at tage kaste sig ud i noget helt andet end musik. En måned efter de fik sendt Sound of a Rebel på gaden, stod de klar på MetroXpress redaktion kl. 10.00 som gæsteredaktører. Hvem husker ikke den flotte forside, hvor de optræder i soldateruniformer a la 1864 med et stort Dannebrog og en fodbold under titlen Danskerne kommer? Det var den mest interessante og informativ avis jeg har læst, for det var nogle virkelig gode bemærkninger og tanker der blev delt flittigt ud af Waqas, Isam og Lenny.

Til slut vil jeg takke dem for de virkelig rammende tekster og evnen til at få lytteren til at sætte ipod’en på repeat. Jeg får gåsehud af I only ask of god og Look into my eyes. Men så kommer danselysten til Let off some steam. We all know Isam Bachiri, Lenny Martinez and Waqas Ali Qadri as Denmark’s most international, big selling hip hop group, Outlandish. They fit absolutely to the name, which Lenny discovered by turning the pages of a dictionary: They are apart, foreign and exotic. Their music genre is versatile and is a combination of R & B, Hip-hop, rap and soul, the language is primarily in English, Spanish, and sometimes Arabian, Pakistani and Danish.

But how did the story of Outlandish start? We go all the way back to 1991 in a suburban to Copenhagen, Brøndby Strand, where football was a part of daily life. Isam was from Morocco, Lenny from Honduras and Waqas from Pakistan in the same high-rise block, where they played and went to youth club Søholt, listening to hip hop and performing break dance. In high school, they developed their musical experience, which they performed in a classroom for music at Vester Borgerdyd High School. They called themselves YGB / Young Gifted and Brown. YGB performed at parties, Easter concerts and other arrangements.

In 1997 Outlandish were “born”, they released their first single Pacific to Pacific for Amnesty International. In 1998 the single Saturday Night came out, and came on the soundtrack to the Danish movie Pizza King. And at last the first album Outlandish’s Official was released the 26. of April 2000. After that a lot of things happened for the band. They received a price at the Danish Music Awards 2001 for Danish Rap of the year. And many prices followed, a Steppeulv, Kunstrådets musikudvalgs pris on the amount of 250.000 kr., Odder Højskoles Elevforenings Kulturpris, Den Gyldne Grundtvig at 10.000 kr., Nordic Music Award for Best Nordic Artist and MTV’s Europe Music Award for Best Danish Name.

They have worked with a number of famous performers, producers and djs, at their side, both live, on video and records. Among others they are: Burhan G., Gypsies, Jonas Rendbo, Majid, Sami Yusuf, Uso, Zaki, Lucy Love, Salah Edin, Yadam, Danny Rai, Lawand Shakur Othman aka Turkman Souljah, Vicky Singh, Casper Bech, Toke Rosenkilde, Saqib, Kato, Yousuf Othman and Mintman (Carsten Mortensen).

Outlandish has almost been around the globe. They toured with no other than Carlos Santana for more than 2 years, warming up for him and joining him on the song ”Everybody”. Already there, they came to France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Middle East and USA. Over there they have been on an USA tour, visiting Los Angeles, Tampa, Detroit, Dallas, Chicago and New York, where they played a supporting concert in headquarter of UN. They have been in Egypt, Cairo, Rumania, Bulgaria, Dubai, Sweden, Norway and Sarajevo. They even played on Wembley in England, performing for over 15.000 people to another supporting concert. Royal Albert Hall in London has Outlandish visited, too. And home in Denmark they have been in Parken, Tivoli, to Roskilde Festival, played in Langelandsfestivalen and much, much more.

You have to admire those 3 gentlemen; they have been engaged to charity, here in Denmark and abroad. As an example, they donated a DMA price and a guitar that Lenny received from Carlos Santana. They got a warm heart. Outlandish even got Desmond Tutu to dance at the Hopenhagen, which surprised us all getting on the stage while they sang, I only ask of God. It was a tremendous atmosphere, really international, right on Rådhuspladsen.

Outlandish are not afraid of trying other ways of expression than music. A month after the release of Sound of a Rebel, they stood ready on the editor’s office of MetroXpress at 100.00 o’clock as guest editors. Who has forgotten the amazing front page, where they performed in soldiers uniforms from 1864, holding a Dannebrog banner and a football under the title: Danskerne kommer (the Danes are coming)? The most interesting and informative news paper I have read, with comments and thoughts willingly given away from Waqas, Isam and Lenny.

For last I will thank them for their powerful lyrics, and the ability to get the listener to put the ipod on repeat. I almost cry to I only ask of God and Look into my eyes. But when Let off some steam comes, I feel like dancing. Thank you for letting the sun break through by the sound of Isam, Lenny and Waqas, with the common name Outlandish. ”I vill Rock All Day and Feels Like Saving the World.
